To become licensed as a professional engineer in California, a candidate needs to complete their degree, pass two competency exams and obtain an engineer-in-training certificate in order to accumulate six years of supervised experience, then pass a state exam. Civil engineers need to take an additional exam. The Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors, and Geologists also requires a background check.
